From Welding Sparks to Green Growth: How One Young Leader is Transforming TVET and Communities in Kenya

In the heart of Turkana—a region more often defined by resilience than by resources—rises a young champion of transformation: Emmanuel Esekon Loroo. Affectionately called “The TVET General,” and officially recognized as National TVET Ambassador by the Kenya National Federation of Jua Kali Associations (KNFJKA), Emmanuel embodies the power of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to rewrite destinies.

With sparks flying from the steel he welds, he is more than a skilled artisan; he is proof that TVET is where Kenya’s future entrepreneurs are forged. Clad in overalls branded with the Kenyan flag and TVET insignia, Emmanuel stands tall as both practitioner and passionate advocate.

From the Workshop to the World

Emmanuel’s journey began humbly in a local workshop, where he first gripped a welding torch. What started as “just a job” quickly evolved into purpose. After graduating top of his TVET class—mastering metal fabrication, safety standards, and precision work—he distinguished himself by mentoring peers, encouraging girls to enroll in TVET courses, and volunteering for community projects.

The Green Warrior

But the workshop was only the launchpad. Wearing KNFJKA’s combat‑green gear, Emmanuel became a WASH and SDG ambassador, spearheading tree‑planting drives and clean‑water campaigns during World Water Day and World Environment Day. Whether cradling seedlings in the desert sand or hoisting banners for SDG awareness, he shows that skills and sustainability must go hand‑in‑hand.

The Entrepreneur: RENJAZ Hair & Beauty Parlor

Armed with nothing but TVET business acumen and unshakeable grit, Emmanuel set out to prove that youth do not need to wait for opportunity—they can create it. He converted a shipping container into RENJAZ Hair & Beauty Parlor, an accredited LESDEP Skills Center hub offering:

Hair services – wash & blow‑dry, Ghanians, braiding/twists, crochets, locs retouch & freshlocs

Barbering – precision haircuts and beard grooming

Nail care – manicures, pedicures, gel & tips

Make‑up & hair treatments

Each client leaves with the RENJAZ promise: “With us, you just feel beautiful.”

The container‑salon now employs fellow TVET graduates, runs weekend skills clinics, and serves as a live demonstration of KNFJKA’s Local Entrepreneur Skill Development & Educational Program (LESDEP) in action.

💬 A Voice for Youth, a Symbol of Hope

Today Emmanuel is more than a welder, barber, or stylist—he is a role model and climate‑action soldier. Traveling across counties, he addresses schools, workshops, and public forums with a simple, powerful message:

“Let’s move from job seekers to job creators. Skills are the new gold. TVET is not a fallback—it is the future.”

Final Word

At KNFJKA, we are honored to journey beside Emmanuel Esekon Loroo. His story proves Kenya’s brightest future is being crafted not only in lecture halls, but in workshops, salons, and the skilled hands of our youth.

This is the story of the TVET General. And his journey is just beginning.
